About a decade old, Forgotten Cats is a Delaware Non-Profit Organization that focuses on TNR (trap/spay/neuter/release back), getting whole feral colonies under control so that the feline friends can live the rest of their lives, but stop adding to the population of homeless cats in the Northern Delaware/Maryland, Southern Pennsylvania/New Jersey areas.
The available opportunities are:
► PetSmart Adoption Center Volunteers – Forgotten Cats runs PetSmart Adoption centers at the Christiana, DE; Brandywine, DE; and Jenkintown, PA stores. The staff is 100% volunteers and we’re always in desperate need of help in order to have people there whenever the stores are open.
In this role, you take care of the kitties, making sure they have food, water, and a clean cage, and also play with them to help spend energy, exercise and socialize. Very important also in this position is your interaction with the public, where you play an important role representing the organization to the general public, communicating our mission to reduce the unwanted population of cats, help people adopt kitties from the center, talk about volunteer opportunities and add your comments to applications received to alert the processor as to whether you feel this is a good home for the kitty or not.
► Clinic Volunteers – Forgotten Cats currently runs two clinics for spaying/neutering, administering shots and minor medical services. The clinics are located in Claymont, DE and Trainor, PA. As a clinic volunteer, you assist the vets in surgery preparation, updating medical records on the online database, post-surgery care, and all clinic related activities.
► Trapping Volunteer – An important part of our work is trapping feral cats to be brought to the clinics where they will receive care and surgery. Your work would be to go to an area where there is a request to trap a colony of feral kitties, accompanied by an experienced trapper, and set up traps. You return a day or two later to pick up the traps and bring them to the clinic.
► Fosters – Fosters are another very important part of our work. Since Forgotten Cats doesn’t have a shelter, only clinics, kitties who need extra time inside before being released back into the wild, or those who are docile and adoptable, but not yet ready to be sent to a center, need to be brought into a caring home where they can stay until they are ready to either be returned, or to go to an adoption center. Fosters help nurture kittens who have lost their moms, or provide shelter to the mom and her kittens until the kittens are at least 2 lbs (minimum weight required for surgery). Once they have had surgery and are ready to be adopted, the foster brings them to the adoption center assigned to them.
Other situations when fosters are needed are when a kitty who was previously adopted is being returned and there are no open cages at the centers. In these cases, the kitties just need a few days at a home, until we have an opening for them at the center.
These are the positions currently available at the organization. And below is a list of the benefits of doing volunteer work with us!
